Born in Kaduna and hailing from Odo-Otin Local Government Area, Osun State, DSC Olanike Balogun’s aviation journey took off in 2002 when she joined the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) as a Customs Assistant in the Airwing Unit.
Initially serving as cabin crew, she dared to dream bigger, transforming her career trajectory with ambition and resilience.
In a recent interview, Balogun shared her remarkable story. “Staying in the Service when many colleagues left for better-paying airline jobs was tough, but I was determined to contribute to public service and achieve my dream of becoming a pilot,” she said.
Her milestones are as impressive as her resolve: an Advanced Diploma in Air Ticketing and Cabin Services, a Master’s in Public Administration from Ahmadu Bello University, and a Pilot Certification from the Flying Academy in Miami, Florida—all with the support of NCS.
Now, as the first female pilot in the NCS Airwing, Balogun credits her achievement to unwavering determination and institutional backing. “This accomplishment inspires women within and beyond the Service to relentlessly pursue their dreams,” she said.
Balogun’s passion extends beyond her cockpit duties. “I hope my journey motivates young Nigerians, especially women, to chase their dreams and break barriers,” she added.
Comptroller General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, praised her dedication, calling her achievement a testament to the NCS’s commitment to capacity building and innovation. “Her story exemplifies what is possible with determination and institutional support,” he noted.
Balogun’s story is a beacon for dreamers, proving that the sky is not the limit—it’s just the beginning.
